My Thoughts on the June 18th Episode of AEW Grand Slam Mexico:
My Thoughts: An overall fun show. I'm really happy they went all out for this Grand Slam Mexico event and gave the fans a good showing because there are a lot of events this week involving AEW, CMLL & ROH roster members. The matches on this show were hit or miss. Some of the matches I had high expectations, but they didn't deliver to my standards. But I did enjoy the 4 Million Peso Four Way Match. I hope they do come back to Mexico in the future because the fans were great, and I loved the venue as well. Overall fun show.
The June 18th | Episode of AEW Grand Slam Mexico | Match Ratings:
The Opening Match: Adam Cole, Atlanis, Atlantis Jr., Bandido, Brody King, Daniel Garcia & Templario vs. Dax Harwood, The Don Callis Family (Hechicero, Josh Alexander, Konosuke Takeshita, Kyle Fletcher & Lance Archer) & Volador Jr. in a 14-Man Tag Team Match | Match Rating: **** | The 14-Man Tag was fun. I thought this match showcased everybody from the AEW side and the CMLL side. Atlanis Jr. was getting the Roman Reigns 2015 treament as the fans were disapproving him and raining down boo's on him., But the in-ring action was very fun. I like this match because they get to have a mixture of different styles go at it in this match. The legendary Atlantis Sr. was in this match as well with his other counterpart. CMLL has been a very exciting promotion this year, and since this AEW partnership came together, it has just been a fun partnership as both sides are thriving because of it.
2nd Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Mark Briscoe in a Singles Match | Match Rating: **.75 | I had a lot of expectations going into this match because it was Kazuchika Okada going against Mark Briscoe. But this was my least favorite match from the Grand Slam Mexico. I thought this match could have been a lot better in a sense to make Kazuchika Okada more of a threat. But he did what he did after the match, and I thought Kenny Omega would come out and save him, but gotta remember Kenny Omega is selling the injury he got the week before. But this was a letdown for me because I like both wrestlers and wanted a fun back-and-forth battle.
3rd Match: Mistico vs. MJF (with Bobby Lashley, MVP & Shelton Benjamin) | Match Rating: ***.50 | A very good match, and man, Mistico is a legend in CMLL. I remember him as Sin Cara back in 2011-2013 when he was touted to be the next great luchador in WWE. But I always knew outside of WWE, he was the man. But I enjoyed everything about this match and how MJF played the heel role so well, to the point he almost had a real-life altercation with someone after the show in Mexico City. MJF seems rejuvenated since pairing with the Hurt Business, but man, I hope a rematch of this match happens at ALL IN Texas because a Hair vs. Mask Match would be a good ending for this feud. But MJF again ripped the mask of a luchador's face and continues to build heat everywhere he goes.
4th Match: Hologram vs. Lio Rush vs. Mascara Dorada vs. Ricochet in a 4 Million Pesos Four Way Match | Match Rating: ****.25 | Now these are the type of matches that I enjoy. My favorite in-ring style is high-flyers, and this match had all of that. We saw Lio Rush and Ricochet have a brief partnership in the match, taking down Mascara Dorada and Hologram. But this match was awesome. This match made the crowds come alive because of the amazing stunts and moves they pull off I thought Ricochet was going to win this match, but Hologram, who is still undefeated, I believe, got the win and the 4 Million Peso prize because of winning this match.
5th Match: Mercedes Moné vs. Zeuxis (c) in a Singles Title Match for the CMLL World Women’s Championship | Match Rating: **.50 | I wasn't familiar with Zeuxis, but she gave me a solid first showing. Mercedes Moné, who's on her Kenny Omega 2021 belt collector run, has won the CMLL Women's World Title. This match could've been a lot better, but Mercedes Moné has been having an all-timer year She has been conquering everything that is put in her way and now she can add one more title to that list as now she builds more momentum and stem to AEW ALL IN as she prepares to face the AEW Women's World Champion Toni Storm for her title in a couple weeks.
The Main Event Match: Death Riders (Jon Moxley & Wheeler Yuta), The Beast Mortos & The Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson & Nicholas Jackson) (with Marnia Shafir) vs. The Opps (Katsuyori Shibata, Powerhouse Hobbs & Samoa Joe), Swerve Strickland & Will Ospreay in a Ten-Man Tag Team Match | Match Rating: ****.50 | The All-Star Main Event Ten-Man Tag Team Match. The Death Riders, as of late, have been interesting instead of corny, which I'm happy they're starting to tread the right direction. The team of The Opps and Swerve Strickland, and Will Ospreay was a fun group to watch in this match. We have been having so many all-star tag team matches as of recent weeks, which I'm not complaining about because they have been entertaining to watch. I really was shocked the heels came out on top instead of the baby faces, but this was a solid main event and a good way to end the show because we saw Hangman Page stand tall.
The June 18th | AEW Grand Slam Mexico | Match of the Night: Death Riders (Jon Moxley & Wheeler Yuta), The Beast Mortos & The Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson & Nicholas Jackson) (with Marnia Shafir) vs. The Opps (Katsuyori Shibata, Powerhouse Hobbs & Samoa Joe), Swerve Strickland & Will Ospreay in a Ten-Man Tag Team Match | Match Rating: ****.50
The June 18th | Edition of AEW Grand Slam Mexico | Episode Grade: 7.50/10 (B) | An overall enjoyable show. I'm happy they went all out for the Grand Slam Mexico event, providing fans with a great experience amidst a busy week of AEW, CMLL, and ROH events. The matches varied in quality; some didn't meet my expectations. However, I enjoyed the 4 Million Peso Four Way Match. I hope they return to Mexico, as the fans were fantastic and the venue was great. Overall, a fun event.
