My Thoughts on the July 16th Episode of Wednesday Night AEW Dynamite:
My Thoughts: The after-show of ALL IN featured solid matches and advancing storylines. Key developments included the continuation of the Adam Page and MJF feud, Darby Allin targeting Jon Moxley, Swerve Strickland challenging Kazuchika Okada, and Athena aiming for the AEW Women’s World Championship, Toni Storm. Overall, the shows have been enjoyable to watch.
The July 16th | Episode of Wednesday Night AEW Dynamite — Match Ratings:
The Opening Match: Kyle Fletcher (with Don Callis & Lance Archer) vs. Mascara Dorada in a Singles Match | Match Rating: **** | Man, Mascara Dorada is so much fun to watch. I love watching him wrestle. His style of wrestling is very entertaining, but this was a very fun opener. Kyle Fletcher didn't capitalize at ALL IN, so he's angry and filled with rage as he didn't get the AEW TNT Title. I do see him confronting Dustin Rhodes soon, but this match was fun; it did the job, making the crowd feel entertained.
2nd Match: The Don Callis Family (Hechicero & Josh Alexander) & The Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson & Nicholas Jackson) vs. Bandido, Brody King & JetSpeed (Kevin Knight & Mike Bailey) in an Eight-Man Tag Team Match | Match Rating: ****.25 | The best match of the show was the All-Star Tag match. While I enjoy these matches, they can sometimes become repetitive. I’d like to see some changes in the matchmaking from Tony Khan, as it seems to be a consistent theme with the All-Star Tags. While it’s not necessarily a bad thing, there needs to be some fresh matchups because the format has been repeating lately. That said, the match itself was a lot of fun and the highlight of the show. I especially enjoyed seeing Bandido, as he is one of the best wrestlers in AEW. Overall, it was a very entertaining multi-man tag team match.
3rd Match: Thekla vs. Kris Statlander vs. Queen Aminata vs. Willow Nightingale in a 100,000 Dollar Four-Way Match | Match Rating: ***.50 | Thekla has shown significant improvement since her time in Stardom. Initially, many were not impressed with her singing in AEW, but she has managed to capture a lot of attention. This match was entertaining, and she performed exceptionally well. Kris Statlander played the muscle in this match. I also appreciated the inclusion of Queen Naminata and Willow Nightingale, but Thekla's victory surprised me. It seems that AEW has a lot of confidence in her abilities.
4th Match: Kazuchika Okada (with Don Callis) vs. Quintero in a Singles Match | Match Rating: N/A | The New AEW Unified Champion, Kazuchika Okada, had a quick match as it ended before it even started. After the match, he called out Swerve Strickland after what he did to The Young Bucks at ALL IN. Swerve Strickland came out and went face-to-face with Kazuchika Okada. I love this being the next feud for Okada, as this can be money for AEW. I hope they treat the AEW Unified Championship as the secondary World Title and make it feel special.
The Main Event Match: Adam Page, Mark Briscoe & Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Death Riders (Claudio Castagnoli, Jon Moxley & Wheeler Yuta) (with Marnia Shafir) in a Six-Man Tag Team Match | Match Rating: *** | Man, I had a lot of hope for this match, but didn't get to be every I wanted it to be. Like I said earlier, these tag team matches need to dwindle because I wish Adam Page had a one-on-one match and had a cool little bout. This match was okay, and I thought the Death Riders were going to kick Jon Moxley out, but Darby Allin appeared in the rafters and did what his old man did, Sting, and stared down Jon Moxley.
The July 16th | Wednesday Night AEW Dynamite — Match of the Night: The Don Callis Family (Hechicero & Josh Alexander) & The Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson & Nicholas Jackson) vs. Bandido, Brody King & JetSpeed (Kevin Knight & Mike Bailey) in an Eight-Man Tag Team Match | Match Rating: ****.25
The July 16th | Edition of Wednesday Night AEW Dynamite — Episode Grade: 8.25/10 (B+) — This was a great after-show of ALL IN. They kept the momentum going with solid matches, and new stories progressing, we see the 2nd Act of the Adam Page and MJF Feud unlocking. Darby Allin sets his sights on Jon Moxley, Swerve Strickland is Kazuchika Okada’s next challenger, and Athena is finally targeting the AEW Women’s World Champion in Toni Storm. This is what I like, keep this going because the shows have been a delight to watch.
Next Week Wednesday Night AEW Dynamite | July 23rd Episode | The Announced Matches & Segments:
