My Official Thoughts on the May 8th Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown:

My Official Thoughts: SmackDown is a god-awful show right now, because the writing makes absolutely no sense from week to week. Nothing feels consistent, nothing feels earned, and it’s like they’re just throwing random segments together hoping something will stick. Where are Los Garza, Fraxiom, Carmelo Hayes, and Ilja Dragunov, the people who actually deserve the TV time? These are talents who could carry the show, put on banger matches, and give fans something to look forward to, yet they’re barely on, if at all. Instead, we get filler, recycled segments, and angles that go nowhere. This show lacks so much it’s insane. It lacks direction, it lacks urgency, and it definitely lacks any sense of long-term storytelling. You’d think that with a major TV slot every Friday, they would treat the show like it matters, but it feels like an afterthought. We keep hearing, “Oh, just keep watching, it’s going to get better,” but based on what we’re seeing, why should anyone believe that? Week after week, fans are told to be patient, yet nothing actually improves. The pacing is slow, the stories are shallow, and the energy is completely flat. It’s not going to get better if this is the standard they’re comfortable putting on television. The whole episode was very boring from start to finish. Segments drag on for too long, matches feel meaningless, and there’s no real payoff for investing your time. Instead of gripping storylines or must-see moments, we get content that feels like it was thrown together an hour before the show went live. There’s no hook, no reason to be excited for next week, just more of the same dull, predictable nonsense. And the Main Event segment, the closing moments of the show, the part that’s supposed to leave you hyped and talking all week, is about a Gingerbread Funeral. A Gingerbread Funeral. That’s what they chose as the big final image of the show. What are we even doing here? That’s the last thing you want your viewers to see before the credits roll? It’s supposed to be a wrestling show, yet they leaned into a goofy, nonsensical angle that completely undercuts any seriousness or intensity the show should have. Instead of creating drama or excitement, it just makes the whole product feel like a joke. What has this show become? SmackDown used to feel important, like a place where big stories played out, and top stars were showcased. Now it feels like a lazy, directionless, mid-card variety show with no identity. It’s so garbage, unwatchable, and totally lacking in creativity. There’s no edge, no risk-taking, no effort to build new stars in a meaningful way. SmackDown added Gunther, and that’s great. He’s an incredible talent and absolutely someone who can elevate the product. But one great wrestler doesn’t fix an entire show that’s broken at the foundation. You can’t just throw Gunther onto a badly written, poorly structured show and expect everything to magically improve. If the creative direction doesn’t change, if the writing doesn’t tighten up, and if they don’t start featuring the right people in serious, compelling stories, then it doesn’t matter who they add. Right now, despite a few bright spots on the roster, this show is still awful.

The May 8th Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown — My Official Match Ratings:

The Opening Match: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Kiana James (with Giulia) in a WWE Women’s United States Title Match | The Match Rating: **.50 — This was a little fun opener. Kiana James is getting her first singles title match on the Main Roster as she goes ahead against Tiffany Stratton, who won the title off of Giulia weeks back. But this was pretty solid. I can say these two had some solid chemistry. We know the pending Giulia & Kiana James break-up is very evident at this point in time, as Kiana James had the match won with the roll-up, but with Giulia distracting the referee, she hurt Kiana James chances. As Tiffany Stratton got the opening, she struck and retained her WWE Women’s United States Title, as she is 1-0 in title defenses. But more tension is brewing between Giulia & Kiana James as the cracks are starting to break more between these two.

The 2nd Match: Talla Tonga (with Solo Sikoa) vs. Damian Priest in a Singles Match | The Match Rating: ** — This is probably Talla Tonga’s best singles match in WWE. He isn’t a good wrestler, but Damian Priest is a great veteran, so he did the best he could to make Talla Tonga look like the guy in this match. I did feel like it dragged, and went on for too long. I just feel like MFTs are one of the worst stables in the world of wrestling, worse than House of Torture. We saw Tama Tonga come out, which made R-Truth come out. We saw some chaos on the outside. But a Big Boot & Chokeslam ended Damian Priest’s hopes as Talla Tonga pinned the former World Champion. As the MFTs were ready to strike once again, Royce Keys came out to make the save, as he had issues with the MFTs. MFTs need to end as a group. Talla Tonga is probably one of the worst wrestlers in WWE. If you saw him as Hikuelo, then you would understand why I say what I said. But this whole Tag Division is disgusting in the worst way possible. They have destroyed a Tag Division that was the best part of SmackDown a year ago around this time.

The 3rd Match: Ricky Saints vs. Matt Cardona in a Singles Match | The Match Rating: N/A — I wasn’t interested in this match, I’m glad Ricky Saints is getting that push already getting the win over Matt Cardona but they need to give him a stronger oppenent I’m sorry the fact Carmelo Hayes & Ilja Dragunov are off TV but we have Matt Cardona getting minutes is pretty riduclous in my eyes. Ricky Saints got the win, as I do expect a big summer for Ricky Saints, as with how he was in NXT, they need to give him a strong first program on SmackDown. I wonder who his first real feud will be on SmackDown.

The 4th Match: Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne & Lainey Reid) vs. Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair & Rhea Ripley in a Six-Women Tag Team Match | The Match Rating: *** — A pretty fun, Six-Women Tag Team Match which was star-studded as Fatal Influence continue to impress everyone with how dominant they have been since arriving on SmackDown. Lainey Reid finally showing her talents off was awesome. She’s going to be special in WWE because her in-ring ability is just hitting the surface. Wait until a couple of years, when she’s up there with the best of them. The team of Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Clair & Rhea Ripley was fun. Team, they came up short as Jade Cargill made her first appearance since WrestleMania, laying out Rhea Ripley, helping Fatal Influence get another win. As B-Fab & Michin attacked afterwards, Jade Cargill stood tall. This was a very fun match, but this is what we need more of these fun, star-studded matches. Not MFTs slop on SmackDown.

The Main Event Match: Royce Keys vs. Tama Tonga (with Solo Sikoa & Talla Tonga) in a Singles Match | The Match Rating: **.50 — Seeing Royce Keys getting a Main Event Match tonight was pretty cool. I have been a fan of Powerhouse Hobbs since I was introduced to him in AEW, seeing him in a big spot, being featured throughout the night, having run-ins with Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, and his main man, Jacob Fatu. Royce Keys looked solid in this match. He had a decent time in this match against Tama Tonga, with the end being Tama Tonga getting the Spinebuster to get the loss, as Royce Keys contiunes his dominance. Solo Sikoa is trying to recruit him, but Royce Keys wants to do this on his own. I really hope once Royce Keys is done with this, he goes after some gold. I need Royce Keys to get the WWE United States Title. He would make for a badass US Champion.

The May 8th Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown  My Match of the Night: Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne & Lainey Reid) vs. Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair & Rhea Ripley in a Six-Women Tag Team Match | The Match Rating: *** — A fun, star-studded Six-Women Tag Team Match showcased Fatal Influence’s dominance on SmackDown. Lainey Reid finally got to show off her talents, and she looks like a future top star in WWE, with her in-ring ability still only scratching the surface. The team of Alexa Bliss, Charlotte Flair, and Rhea Ripley was entertaining, but they came up short after Jade Cargill returned for the first time since WrestleMania, laying out Rhea and helping Fatal Influence secure another win. After B-Fab and Michin attacked, Jade stood tall. Matches like this are exactly what SmackDown needs: more fun, star-powered bouts instead of MFTs’ slop.

The May 8th Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown — My Official Episode Grade: 1.75/10 (F) — SmackDown is a god-awful show, because the writing makes no sense. Where’s Los Garza, Fraxiom, Carmelo Hayes & Ilja Dragunov, the talents that deserve the TV Time? This show lacks so much it’s insane, people need to watch this every Friday, it’s going to get better? It’s not going to get better; the whole episode was very boring. The Main Event segment, the closing moments, is about a Gingerbread Funeral. What has this show become? It’s so garbage, unwatchable, and lacks creativity. SmackDown added Gunther, that’s great, but man, this show is awful.
