My Thoughts on the August 1st Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown:
My Thoughts: This was an all-around very mediocre episode of SmackDown. The first hour was very pleasant to watch, with John Cena reverting to a babyface, a fun title defense from Giulia, and Mr. Iguana and Psycho Clown answering Los Gárzas’ Open Challenge. The second hour of the show took a huge dip. Aleister Black and Damian Priest had a good match until the DQ finish, and Aleister Black looked like a badass and portrayed himself as a killer. Talla Tonga and Jimmy Uso had a very poor match that shouldn’t have happened. SmackDown hasn’t been enjoyable, and it doesn’t help that they keep dragging out the lifeless Bloodline story. But I think it’s time for the WWE Draft to make its way because the overhaul needs to happen.
The August 1st Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown — Match Ratings:
The Opening Match: Giulia (with Kiana James) (c) vs. Zelina Vega in a WWE Women’s United States Title Match | The Match Rating: ***.75 — This was a great first title defense for Giulia. I didn’t have high expectations for this match as the one at the Go-Home show before WWE Night of Champions was very mediocre at best, but this was very fun. The fans were very intuned with this match. They were chanting “This is Awesome,” a lot of near-falls, and Zelina Vega. This was probably her best performance since last year when she faced Liv Morgan for the WWE Women’s World Title. But great title defense for Giulia, now she moves on to the next challenger, which will come shortly.
2nd Match: Los Garzas (Angel & Berto) (with Santos Escobar) (c) vs. Mr. Iguana & Psycho Clown in a AAA World Tag Team Title Match | The Match Rating: N/A — Guess who answered the Open Challenge? Mr. Iguana and Psycho Clown of Triple AAA. This was a cool moment as they made their SmackDown Debut to a loud ovation. Psycho Clown started off the match and tried to weaken up Los Garzas, but it wasn’t working. Mr. Iguana got the hot tag and had a moment as the crowd erupted. There was some sloppiness from this match, but overall just a fun, quick title match as Los Garzas retain and continue to be the AAA World Tag Team Champions.
3rd Match: Damian Priest vs. Aleister Black in a Singles Match | The Match Rating: N/A — This was the most anticipated match for me on this show. But this match was starting to get good before the DQ Finish, but the DQ Finish made Aleister Black look like a straight badass. I enjoyed the beatdown he gave Damian Priest. I do hope this feud ends on a PLE because they have built this story well and executed Aleister Black’s Heel Turn well. Damian Priest sold the hell out of the Black Mass from Aleister Black. But a solid match, wish it had a finish, but glad the feud is continuing.
The Main Event Match: Talla Tonga (with Solo Sikoa) vs. Jimmy Uso in a Singles Match | The Match Rating: * — This match was awful. Talla Tonga getting the Main Event Slot wasn’t the right choice. Jimmy Uso had some solid moments, but this match just wasn’t good at all. What was the point of having this match? Afterwards, Jacob Fatu came out as the Steel Cage came down and dismantled JC Mateo and Tonga Loa. But this was not a good match by any means.
The August 1st WWE Friday Night SmackDown — The Match of the Night: Giulia (with Kiana James) (c) vs. Zelina Vega in a WWE Women’s United States Title Match | The Match Rating: ***.75
The August 1st Episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown — The Episode Grade: 5.50/10 (C) — This started as a very good SmackDown, but the 2nd Hour took a huge dip. SmackDown hasn’t been enjoyable, and it doesn’t help when they keep dragging the lifeless Bloodline Story. But I think it’s time to have the WWE Draft make its way because the overhaul needs to happen.
