My Thoughts on the WWE Premium Live Event — WWE SummerSlam:
My Thoughts: The opener for SummerSlam Night Two was an absolute thrill, setting a high bar for the rest of the evening. Having Naomi in the match was a delightful surprise; her talent and resilience truly deserve this spotlight more than anyone else. The tension in the ring escalated when IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley formed a brief but impactful alliance, teaming up to target Naomi, which added an extra layer of drama to the proceedings. The in-ring action was lively and filled with high-energy exchanges that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The chemistry between IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley was electric, and their fierce competition resonated with the crowd, who erupted every time they clashed. The final moments of the match were nothing short of exhilarating; the dual Moonsault and Split Legged Moonsault demonstrated their incredible athleticism, but it was Naomi who skillfully executed a reverse pin, ultimately retaining her title. This finish felt just right, providing a satisfying conclusion to a spectacular spot-fest TLC Match that had everyone engaged. Among all the impressive performances, my MVPs were undoubtedly D.I.Y. Their involvement in nearly every pivotal moment underscored their exceptional skill, and Candice LeRae took one of the most jaw-dropping bumps of the match that will be remembered for ages. Andrade and Rey Fenix showcased breathtaking high-flying maneuvers, keeping the audience in anticipation as I thought they would clinch the win, only to come heartbreakingly close. Fraxiom's high-energy contributions were quite a spectacle as well, particularly Axiom's harrowing Spanish Fly to the outside, which made me wince at the thought of him injuring himself. Nathan Frazer even attempted to replicate Edge's iconic Spear, but Tommaso Ciampa’s quick reflexes allowed him to evade. The crowd gasped as Frazer delivered a stunning springboard moonsault that seamlessly transitioned into a superkick—a moment that perfectly captured the match's exhilarating pace. The Street Profits brought their trademark charisma, with Montez Ford bouncing off the ropes and electrifying the audience with his high-flying antics. The Motor City Machine Guns provided the seasoned perspective that tied the match together, enhancing their legendary status in the wrestling world with every move. The Wyatt Sicks were a wildcard in this contest, attempting to disrupt the competition and prevent anyone from claiming the WWE Tag Team Titles. In the end, their efforts were in vain as the champions retained, capping off an incredible match. While the next match was the weakest of the three, it still delivered a solid storyline conclusion to a lengthy feud. Lyra Valkyria, the underdog babyface, fought valiantly against Becky Lynch, enduring brutal chair shots and overwhelming odds. Despite the chaotic action, I felt the match dragged on longer than necessary and would have benefitted from a swifter conclusion. Bayley’s attempt to assist Lyra backfired, ultimately costing her the match and enforcing the stipulation that declares she cannot challenge for the WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship as long as Becky Lynch holds the title. This encounter, unfortunately, stood out as the low point of the SummerSlam weekend. The Steel Cage match featuring Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu, while having the potential for high drama, fell flat. Despite the stakes the cage brought, both competitors failed to capitalize on the structure itself, leading to a lackluster experience overall. Jimmy Uso’s interference added to the confusion, particularly when Talla Tonga took him down with deft precision. The ending moments felt botched and left much to be desired, leading to a win for Solo Sikoa. It’s time to liberate Jacob Fatu from the Bloodline storyline, as it's become stagnant and uninspired. In contrast, AJ Styles versus Dominik Mysterio was a breath of fresh air, brimming with excitement and nostalgia. Dominik Mysterio made a bold entrance in a mask that drew a chorus of boos while AJ Styles honored Eddie Guerrero, arriving in a Low-Rider alongside his son, dressed in Guerrero's iconic SummerSlam 2005 attire. This harkened back to their past stories, especially since that earlier match revolved around Dominik’s custody. The match was peppered with nods to Eddie’s legendary strategies and moves. Dominik cleverly outmaneuvered Styles, using his unzipped boots to land a sneaky blow while the referee's attention was diverted, allowing him to retain the WWE Intercontinental Title. The final match of the night lived up to the hype with John Cena putting on what could be his best performance since the 2017 Royal Rumble against AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. Cena, embodying the beloved babyface role, moved with agility and purpose, much to the delight of the crowd. As the evening reached its emotional peak, Cody Rhodes, teasing a possible heel turn, ultimately did not commit, allowing Cena to bask in the overwhelming support and admiration of the audience. In a touching conclusion, John Cena embraced the moment, surrounded by fans who once again celebrated him as a champion of the Wrestling Universe, adding a beautiful chapter to his storied legacy in WWE. The vibrant atmosphere and emotional resonance of this Main Event showcased the enduring impact of wrestling and its stars, making for a memorable end to SummerSlam Night Two.
WWE Premium Live Event | WWE SummerSlam — The Match Ratings:
The Opening Match: Naomi (c) vs. IYO SKY vs. Rhea Ripley in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Women’s World Title | The Match Rating: ****.25 — This was a very fun opener to kick things off for SummerSlam Night Two. Naomi being in this match was great. I was so happy for her; she deserves this more than everyone else. IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley had a brief alliance as they were going after Naomi. The in-ring action was very entertaining. IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley battled it out, and the crowd went nuts for it. It doesn't get old when they go up against each other. The ending sequence of the match was very entertaining. When they hit a Moonsault and Split Legged-Moonsault was a good moment, but Naomi got the reverse pin to retain her title, which was the right decision.
The 2nd Match: The Wyatt Sicks (Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy) (c) vs. Andrade and Rey Fenix vs. D.I.Y. (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) vs. Fraxiom (Axiom & Nathan Frazer) vs. Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) vs. The Street Fight Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) in a TLC Match for the WWE Tag Team Titles | The Match Rating: ****.75 — This was an amazing spot-fest TLC Match. Every team in this match was very entertaining. My MVPs of this match were D.I.Y. They were involved in everything, and Candice LeRae took one of the craziest bumps in the match. Andrade and Rey Fenix were doing marvelous high-flying action. I had them winning the match, but they came up close. Fraxiom, they were going insane. Axiom hit a Spanish Fly to the outside in which I thought he shattered his ankle. Nathan Frazer tries to recreate the Edge Spear, but Tommaso Ciampa curls his body up. Nathan Frazer hit a springboard moonsault into a superkick, which was amazing. The Street Profits were super fun. Montez Ford had some fun moments and was jumping around everywhere. Motor City Machine Guns were the veteran presence of the match, and they did a great job providing that. And I was very happy they were in this match to add on to their legendary status in wrestling. The Wyatt Sicks had everyone involved to try to prevent anyone from winning the WWE Tag Team Titles, but it worked as they retained. This was such a great match. The SmackDown Tag Division is amazing, and with the WWE Draft, they need to level out the Tag Divisions on both shows.
The 3rd Match: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Lyra Valkyria in an Anything Goes Match for the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Title | The Match Rating: **** — This was the weakest match out of the three, but to me, this was still a very solid match and a good way to end the long feud between these two. Lyra Valkryia was the underdog babyface in this match and tried everything to fight back against Becky Lynch. Lyra Valkyria was zipped, had wicked chair shots, and was toyed around. There was a lot of chaotic action, but I did think this match lasted way too long, and I thought it should've ended much earlier. Bayley came to make a save for Lyra Valkryia, but it didn't work out in the end as she accidentally cost Lyra Valkryia the match, which meant to lose and never challenged for the WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship as long as Becky Lynch is the champion.
The 4th Match: Solo Sikoa (c) vs. Jacob Fatu in a Steel Cage Match for the WWE United States Title | The Match Rating: DUD — This was easily the worst match from the SummerSlam weekend. This match could have been the Main Event of a SmackDown because they could have easily had Aleister Black vs. Damian Priest on the card instead of this or even the Giulia Title Match from SmackDown. Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu had a good match back in Night of Champions. But this match was very terrible. I get that the Steel Cage stipulation was the further the match stakes, but they didn't even do much in the Steel Cage structure. Jimmy Uso came out to try to help as the MFTs came out and tried to help Solo Sikoa, but Talla Tonga took down Jimmy Uso. The ending moments of the match were botched as Talla Tonga ruined that moment. Now that Solo Sikoa won, please separate Jacob Fatu from this and have him feud with new opponents and get him out of the Bloodline Vortex because it's a dead storyline.
The 5th Match: Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. AJ Styles in a WWE Intercontinental Title Match | The Match Rating: ***.50 — This was such a fun match between AJ Styles and Dominik Mysterio. Dominik Mysterio came out with a mask to a roar of boo's pouring down. AJ Styles honored Eddie Guerrero and came out with a Low-Rider with his son in the passenger seat and donned Eddie Guerrero's 2005 SummerSlam attire, which is ironic because that match in 05 was for the custody of Dominik Mysterio, and a little nugget, Dominik Mysterio was wearing Rey Mysterio's colorway back in the 2005 SummerSlam Match. But the match itself was having some throwbacks to what Eddie Guerrero used to do in matches. Dominik Mysterio outsmarted AJ Styles and unzipped his boots to hit him with it as the referee wasn't looking to retain the WWE Intercontinental Title.
The Main Event Match: John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes in a Street Fight for the WWE Undisputed Title | The Match Rating: ***** — This was John Cena's best match since the 2017 Royal Rumble match he had AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. This was a SummerSlam Classic. I loved the fact that John Cena was moving at a fast pace and was back being a babyface. I want to forget about the heel turn entirely, as that was one of the worst creative decisions in recent memory. Cody Rhodes was giving in to the heel side of things, and I thought the heel turn was going to happen, but it didn't. You can tell John Cena was enjoying this and loving the fact of being a babyface again. Cody Rhodes is now a 2x WWE World Champion and is on top of the world. John Cena, to a loud reception, was soaking in the crowd's praise as the show closed. An amazing Main Event and touching moment as John Cena is embraced and loved by the people who now respect him in the Wrestling Universe.
WWE Premium Live Event | WWE SummerSlam — The Match of the Night: John Cena (c) vs. Cody Rhodes in a Street Fight for the WWE Undisputed Title | The Match Rating: *****
WWE Premium Live Event | WWE SummerSlam — The Event Grade: 8.25/10 (B+) — This was the 2nd Best Show from WWE this year. I enjoyed the show and thought they did a good job with the matches, except for the Steel Cage Match. But Night Two was a lot better than Night One, in-ring-wise. I did enjoy seeing a lot of the matches getting long durations of time because in Night One, there were some matches that didn’t get above ten minutes, so seeing every match did was good. As we move on to the WWE Draft is ahead and a major reset is pending.
